The understanding of connections between process, structure, properties, and performance is at the core of materials science. Yet developing these connections often takes months to years. Previous work in combinatorial materials discovery has shown that accelerated test techniques can reveal unexpected connections. Today, there are a number of high-throughput and data-rich full-field experimental techniques that are emerging to facilitate faster discovery. While most of the advancement has been at the macroscale, there are significant opportunities ahead for accelerated or in-process characterization at the micro- to nano-scale. Ultimately, these fast experimental capabilities can facilitate rapid calibration and validation of models that can subsequently explore beyond the experimental space.
