||Microstructural Characterization of Plutonium Based Fuels

The development of metal alloy fuels for minor actinide transmutation in fast reactor systems is currently being investigated by the Advanced Fuels Campaign of the Nuclear Technology Research and Development program (AFC/NTRD). In this work, results of microstructural characterization of metallic Pu-based alloys before and after annealing will be presented and the effects of microstructure evolution on bulk material properties will be discussed. Obtained data is used for direct reconstruction of the fuel microstructure in MARMOT code. This work provides a first step towards establishing procedures for coupling experiments with modeling and simulation to investigate critical material behavior in nuclear fuel.
