||LL-4: Characterization of Duplex Stainless Steel Casting with Gadolinium as Neutron Absorbers for Spent Fuel Storage Applications

Recently, there has been increased demand for high quality, neutron absorbing materials for storage and disposal spent nuclear fuels and high-level radioactive wastes. In this work, we fabricated Gd-containg duplex stainless steel having an excellent ability to absorb neutron. Then we investigated the effects of the addition of Gd on machinability, mechanical properties, corrosion properties and changes in microstructure of the experimental alloy. solution treatment was carried out to remove intermetallic compounds (σ and χ phase) which occurred during the air-cooling process. Measurement of Charpy impact test and tensile test were conducted in sequence to determine changes in mechanical properties.
