| Abstract Scope |
The cold spray materials deposition technology is being investigated as a possible repair technique to potentially mitigate corrosion of sensitized 5083 aluminum alloy in marine environments. The corrosion characteristics of cold sprayed 5083 aluminum alloy coatings and pure aluminum on 5083 aluminum alloy substrates using the Nitric Acid Metal Loss Test (NAMLT) were examined. Metallographic analysis was performed before and after NAMLT testing to understand the microstructure of the cold spray coatings and corrosion mechanisms. The mechanical integrity of the coating- substrate interface was evaluated and potentiodynamic corrosion tests in a saline solution were also performed to determine the differences in the electrochemical behavior between the cold sprayed coating and the alloy substrate. |
