Abstract Scope |
In the present investigation, we discuss the feasibility of processing dual matrix AMMCs, where microstructures are generated consisting of Al-Al2O3+Al3Ti composite regions separated by a ductile, predominantly Al, outer matrix. This concept of a “composite-within-a-composite” facilitates microstructural design which is beneficial in increasing the toughness and wear resistance of materials. The reaction processes and formation mechanism for synthesizing the composite are studied by DSC, XRD, SEM and EDS. The microstructure shows the uniformly distributed Al3Ti and Al2O3 in single matrix composites and localised regions of Al-Al2O3+Al3Ti in dual matrix composites. The mechanical properties such as hardness and compressive strength and wear resistance are investigated in details. When compared to an equivalent single matrix composites material, the dual matrix composites show a 21% increase in compressive strength. Also, the presence of the localised composite regions surrounded by Al matrix leads to an enhancement in strength with limited loss in ductility.
