||Fabrication of PyC/SiC Diffusion Couples Using Fluidized Bed CVD Techniques for Radiation Enhanced Diffusion Testing

A development effort is ongoing at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to fabricate pyrocarbon (PyC)/SiC diffusion couples to gain a better understanding of fission product diffusion through the SiC layer of tri-structural isotropic (TRISO) coated fuel particles. These diffusion couples will be ion implanted with Ag, Ag-Pd, Eu, and Sr to study both thermal and radiation-enhanced diffusion kinetics. The PyC/SiC diffusion couples for this work were fabricated using fluidized bed chemical vapor deposition (FBCVD) techniques similar to those used in the advanced gas reactor (AGR) program to produce TRISO coated fuel particles. However, in contrast to standard spherical TRISO particles, these diffusion couple specimens were fabricated to have a flat geometry facilitating fission product depth profiling analysis by modern techniques. Processing conditions were adjusted to match the diffusion couples’ coating properties to that of the AGR-2 TRISO particles and to produce two variants with modified PyC and SiC layers.
