Abstract Scope Nickel-based superalloys are widely used due to their high-temperature strength. While chromium is added to the alloys for oxidation resistance, aluminium and titanium, added to form the γ′ phase, affect oxidation characteristics. It has been shown that titanium can substitute chromium in the chromia lattice enhancing chromia oxidation rates by formation of chromium vacancies. This work seeks to quantify the effect titanium has on the kinetics of chromia formation. Oxidation exposures were performed in air on model alloys with compositions Ni-16Cr-6.5Al-xTi at.% (1≤x≤4) for up to 2000 hours at 750°C. Weight gain measurements have shown that at short times mass gain increased with titanium concentration. At longer times spallation was observed at higher titanium concentrations. Cross-sectional SEM images will be presented with oxide thickness measurements taken to investigate the oxidation kinetics of titanium-doped chromia.
