The increased use of petcoke as a carbon feedstock in gasifiers has introduced vanadium to the slag system, which drastically changed traditional chemistry, leading to an unknown realm of chemical/physical properties. This presentation discusses a long-term research effort centered at US-DOE NETL to establish an understanding of phase equilibria of the Al2O3-CaO-FeO-SiO2-V2O3 system. The impact of temperature, vanadium content, additives (specifically CaO and FeO), and overall slag chemistry on the amorphous and crystalline phases in the synthetic slag system was studied, with data generated being used as input in thermodynamic database creation for commercial software. Equilibrium phase diagrams of the vanadium bearing slag system under the conditions studied will be proposed.
