||EE-1: Designing of Ti-Fe-Si Ternary Amorphous Alloys via a Themodynamic Approach

Thermodynamic calculations in the ternary system Ti-Fe-Si have been performed using the Thermo-Calc software (database TCFE8). A deep ternary eutectic point at the Ti-rich corner of the system was identified to exist, as well as a thermodynamically stable region near the eutectic point. Through mapping of thermodynamic properties of existing ternary amorphous alloys in the Ti-Fe-Si system, it was established that all alloys located in the thermodynamically stable region near the eutectic point had compositions with a clear topological instability and a large negative heat of mixing. This information where used to design and later successfully fabricate several novel amorphous Ti-Fe-Si alloys as ribbons using the melt-spinning technique. Based on the present results it is believed that the topological instability and the negative heat of mixing are key parameters in the design procedure of amorphous alloys, and that thermodynamic calculations can be a powerful tool in this regard.
