Abstract Scope The state-of-the-art for probing in situ microstructural evolution, under an applied stimulus, has progressed significantly in the last several years. However, a given technique is not able to give us all the necessary information to solve a particular problem. In this talk, we describe the use of multi-scale, multi-modal approaches to understand microstructural evolution and damage in metallic materials, such as aluminum alloys and Sn-based alloys. Using a combination of x-ray microtomography, focused ion beam, and EBSD, a fundamental understanding of the physics of deformation in several systems was obtained. The challenges associated with imaging, segmentation, and combining data sets will be highlighted and described.
