Abstract Scope Leak detection along thousands of kilometers of natural gas pipelines requires an inexpensive sensing platform capable of remote interrogation over large geographical expanses with varied terrain and in areas not accessible to conventional sensing technologies. Two promising sensing platforms for such applications are surface acoustic wave devices and waveguide-based optical fiber sensors which employ porous sorbent coatings. The reversible gas adsorption behavior of physical sorbents under near ambient conditions make these materials attractive coatings for gas sensing devices. Recent advances in the development of both sensing platforms for remote detection of CH4 will be discussed.
