In this study, stress relaxation behavior of AZ31 magnesium alloy is studied in both compression and tension modes. Due to high plastic anisotropic nature of AZ31 alloy, the amount of stress drop during relaxation is different in tension and compression. It is observed that in tensile loading, (varying amount of) stress relaxation followed by deformation till failure showed increased ductility as compared to monotonic loading. The effects of temperature and strain rate on the magnitude of the stress drop are also investigated. To understand in detail the microscopic mechanisms active during relaxation, full field elasto-visco plastic crystal plasticity modeling coupled with detailed EBSD is currently utilized.
