| Abstract Scope |
The eye is frequently subjected to dynamic loads and responds in a dynamic manner over fairly high ranges of strain. An important issue in the field of eye research is the rate dependence of the constitutive properties of ocular structural tissues, namely the cornea and the sclera. These tissues are layered composite materials comprised largely of collagen fibers. In this study, the high strain rate behavior of bovine ocular tissue under compressive loading has been experimentally determined. The data can be used to develop a compact constitutive model describing the rate dependent response of the material. In general, the work has application to computer models for ocular response and injury, and the investigation of ocular disorders of a mechanical nature, such as glaucoma. |
