Abstract Scope The simultaneous collection of material response during uniaxial loading and X-ray 3D imaging allows materials researchers to directly identify failure mechanisms. Synchrotron light sources, such as the Advanced Photon Source, are useful in that the high X-ray flux allows researchers to continuously acquire high speed, 3D, phase contrast, images during uniaxial loading at ~0.4 /s strain rates. The compressive and tensile loading of 3D printed materials will be demonstrated, including high resolution prints of polymeric lattice structures. Analysis of the images through the use of advanced techniques, such as eigenvector centrality as well as finite element modeling, will be shown. The combination of these techniques, when applied to 3D printed engineered lattices, in which the structure is methodically changed, provides an avenue for the study of deformation and damage. Additionally, it opens up opportunities to validate material models by the side-by-side comparison of the modeled performance to the mechanical response.
