Abstract Scope In this work, we present a systematic quantification of the contributions of praseodymium and dysprosium to enhancing the temperature dependence of hard magnetic properties of Nd-Fe-B magnets. Nd-Fe-B based materials are the current state-of-the-art high performance magnets. Addition of Co and Dy is common for improving high temperature performance. The higher anisotropy in Pr2Fe14B compared to Nd2Fe14B indicates potentials for improving high temperature performance with praseodymium. We recently obtained dysprosium-free high coercivity magnet by co-addition of praseodymium and TiC in melt-spun ribbons; which retained >10 kOe at ~125 oC. Systematic quantification and comparison of the contributions of praseodymium and dysprosium to high temperature magnetic performance will guide the selection between praseodymium and dysprosium containing Nd-Fe-B considering desired properties for high temperature applications. Since praseodymium is typically co-mined with neodymium, this work will demonstrate the importance of new technologies that enable adjustment of praseodymium-to-neodymium ratio during oxide reduction.
