Abstract Scope Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) are consisting of alternating laminates of metals and fiber reinforced polymeric composites. In order to enhance the interfacial bonding between the laminates, various surface treatment methods can be used on the metal surfaces. In this research, FMLs of alternating laminates of aluminum/epoxy-basalt fibers were fabricated. The effect of various surface treatment methods of mechanical abrasion (MA), alkaline, Forest Products Laboratory etching (FPL-etching) and anodizing treatments on the flexural properties of the fabricated FMLs were investigated. Results showed that the MA and alkaline etching treatments were not found suitable for enhancing the flexural properties. On the other hand, anodizing treatments and FPL-etching caused significant improvements in the flexural and toughness properties. SEM observations showed that anodizing treatments and FPL-etching created a porous layer on the aluminum surfaces that provided channels for the epoxy resin to fill in and caused better adhesion between the laminates.
