Presentation Title Application of Synchrotron Techniques in Characterization of Metal Matrix Nano Composites

Abstract Scope Metal matrix nano composites (MMNC) are highly promising materials for automotive and aerospace applications, offering the potential of significantly better strength to weight ratios than traditional alloys, with improved performance properties, fuel economy while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, the challenge is to produce cast based MMNCs with a uniformly dispersed nano sized reinforced particles into the molten melts. Understanding the shape, size distribution and volume fraction of these nano reinforced particles inside the metal matrix is essential to understand the wettability, clustering tendencies and eventually apply this knowledge to develop new composite materials with superior properties. With the advent of synchrotron radiation sources, it is now possible to use various imaging and scattering techniques to investigate the internal microstructure of MMNCs. This talk covers the application of synchrotron based X-ray imaging, tomography and SAXS techniques for visualization and quantification of defects and reinforcement particles in Al and Mg MMNCs.
