| Abstract Scope |
One of the most significant challenges for Li-ion battery design is the prevention of Li-dendrite growth at the anode side, which would allow faster charging and long life-time for current Li-ion batteries. Based on our previously developed nonlinear phase field model for electrochemical reaction kinetics, which automatically captures the ‘Butler-Volmer’ kinetics and reproduces the ‘Butler-Volmer’ equation at the sharp-interface limit, we couple the ionic species diffusion equations to study the morphological evolution during Li deposition under different electrochemical conditions specified by the ionic concentrations and applied potentials at the electrodes. The coupled system of equations can be used to study how the chemical reaction rate, local overpotential variation and lithium concentration and lithium diffusivity affect the lithium deposition and the corresponding morphological transition of the electrodeposits. |
