||GG-1: A Microscopic Study of Polyether Ether Ketone (PEEK) under Mean Strain Fatigue Loadings

In this study, the microstructure analysis was performed on a semi-crystalline thermoplastic polyether ether ketone (PEEK) subjected to uniaxial strain controlled cyclic loading conditions with various mean strain values (R = -1, R= 0, R = 0.2, and R = 0.25). The fatigue tests were conducted at constant strain amplitudes ranging from 0.02 to 0.04 mm/mm to obtain the cyclic deformation and fatigue life of PEEK. SEM analysis will be performed on fracture surfaces of fatigue specimens to examine crack initiation sites and microstructural inclusions (type, shape, and size) responsible for fatigue cracks. Based on the overall appearance of a typical fracture surface of PEEK specimens, the observed fatigue regimes included crack initiation and microstructurally small crack, whereas the long crack regime was not observed. The effects of mean stain on failure mechanisms involved in crack initiation and growth for PEEK specimens will be examined and discussed.
