Accurate modelling of coating deposition could possibly lower both development costs and development time of new coating processes, for example by chemical vapour deposition. This could be done by a new way of modelling the deposition and the concurrent diffusion and reaction in and between coating and substrate using the DICTRA homogenization model. Two example simulations have been made corresponding to two different experiments depositing Ni and/or Al on super alloy substrates. The simulations capture all the main features of the experiments, including the depth of the inter-diffusion zone. One of the simulations fits well to the experimental composition profile, while the other exhibits slightly higher Al contents in the coating, compared to the experiments. This indicates that the diffusion rate of components from the substrate into the coating is slightly underestimated in the simulation.
