||Particularities of Kinetics of Austenite Decomposition above and below Martensite-Start Temperature in the Carbide Free Low Alloyed Steel

The isothermal kinetics of non-deformed austenite decomposition in the carbide free steel Fe-0.4C-2.78Mn-1.81Si with Ms=275 oC is studied by an electrical resistivity (ER) technique in the temperature interval 450 to 145 oC. The analysis of experimental data of overall kinetics of austenite decomposition has shown the following particularities: I) the onset of acceleration of kinetics at temperatures just above Ms; II) an additional increase of the decomposition rate at temperatures just below Ms; III) a reduction of the decomposition rate on approaching Mf. The reduction of ER during isothermal holding at any temperature below Ms confirms the existing allotropic transformation of austenite and the absence of a stationary boundary between athermal martensite and residual austenite in the steel. The experimental data indicate that carbon partitioning and austenite carbon enrichment are due to bainitic transformation below Ms. The kinetics parameters are evaluated for isothermal austenite decomposition below and above the Ms.
