Abstract Scope An innovative group of metal/ceramic/carbon composites has been developed in order to combine optimum mechanical, thermal and electrical properties, such as mechanical strength, melting temperature, thermal shock resistance, electrical conductivity, and energy absorption. Among several compounds investigated, Molybdenum Carbide-Graphite (MoGr) stands out for its excellent thermo-physical properties. High-energy ball milling and annealing of powder mixtures of graphite and molybdenum were performed to produce Mo-Gr composites. During the first stage of the process, mechanical activation occurs and accelerates the formation of molybdenum carbide reinforced with graphite structures. Annealing the sample then allows the reduction of the number of crystalline defects sites. Characterization of the size, morphology, composition and structure of the composite is carried out using SEM-EDS and XRD respectively. Raman spectroscopy is also used to analyze the graphitic structures.
