||Investigation of the Effect of Sintering Aids and Impurities on the Sintering of B4C by Applying the CALPHAD Approach

Boron carbide (B4C) has various applications such as abrasive powders and grinding wheels. It is due to its interesting properties like high hardness, low density and good chemical stability. However, B4C is difficult to sinter because of its covalently bonded structure. To enhance sintering, applying the sintering aids is a typical method. However, it is important to wisely select an appropriate sintering aid with a proper concentration to add into B4C powder. Otherwise, it will be detrimental for the physical and mechanical properties of the sintered sample. In addition, the effect of impurities on the mechanical and physical properties of the sintered sample should be considered. In this study, we utilize the CALPHAD approach to predict the effect of various sintering aids and impurities on the mechanical and physical properties of the sintered B4C sample.
