Abstract Scope Traditional methods of fusion welding, such as arc welding, are known to cause various undesirable effects when it comes to welding of refractory metals and alloys. Molybdenum is an important refractory metal of commercial importance. However, fusion welding of molybdenum causes embrittlement due to entrainment of impurities in the weld zone and grain growth in the heat effected zone in addition to other logistical limitations because of its poor high-temperature oxidation resistance in air. The current research focused on developing a solid state welding method, namely pressure resistance welding, for joining three molybdenum based materials, commercially pure Mo, TZM, and Mo-La2O3. Microstructural characteristics of the welded joints are examined using optical microscopy, SEM/EBSD and TEM. Mechanical properties are evaluated using Vickers microhardness and mini-tensile testing. This research is likely to provide useful information for various existing and potential applications including space nuclear reactors.
