Abstract Scope The damage mechanisms in low cycle fatigue have been investigated in DS Mar-M200+Hf alloy at high temperatures in air and in high vacuum. Uniaxial LCF at 0.5Hz were performed along the solidification and transverse directions at 650°C (Rσ=0.05 and -1) and 900°C (Rσ=0.05). These properties have been compared to experiments performed using single crystalline (SX) specimens. Under both conditions, a lower fatigue life is observed along transverse direction. Fatigue life at 650°C is controlled by the size and position of Hf-riched carbides acting as crack initiation sites. At 900°C, and as a striking result, LCF lives in air and in high vacuum are the same. Using crack propagation tests performed in air and high vacuum, it will be shown that the obtained same LCF lives in both environments at 900°C result from very different crack initiation mechanisms and near-threshold crack propagation behaviors.
