While the magnetocaloric effect of second order phase transition materials can be accurately reproduced using scaling laws and a phenomenological construction of a universal curve, the hysteresis of first order phase transition magnetocaloric materials is usually described using ad-hoc models.
In this talk we show that the field dependence of the magnetic entropy change can be used to determine the order of the phase transition in an unequivocal way. For first order phase transition materials, we show that first order reversal curves (FORC) can be used to characterize their temperature and field hysteresis, proposing a characterization procedure for the thermal hysteresis that is much more efficient in terms of time and resources. These results will be illustrated with examples of different families of first order phase transition materials.
