||Research on the Deformation Behaviors and Shear Band Multiplication of Bulk Metallic Glasses

Metallic glasses (MGs) have attracted much attention for their exciting physical, chemical and magnetic properties, which suggest they possess great potential in various applications. However, after decades of studies, the deformation mechanism of MGs is still not fully understood. Here we’ll present a finite element method simulation to investigate the shear band multiplication process in metallic glasses. It shows the formation and sliding of a shear band would induce the stress field redistribution, and higher stress region would occur along the direction perpendicular to the original shear band. It would result in the activation of a new shear band if the sliding and propagation of the original shear band could be retarded. These results could reasonably explain the dependence of plasticity of metallic glasses on both of the material and the loading condition. The affecting factors on shear band multiplication process in metallic glasses have been discussed.
