||Studies on Isothermal and Cyclic Oxidation Behavior of Titanium Aluminide Coating Developed by Laser Cladding

The present study involves the detailed investigation of isothermal and cyclic oxidation behavior of Ti-45Al-0.5Si alloy coating developed on Ti-6Al-4V alloy substrate by Laser Cladding Process. Isothermal and cyclic oxidation study has been carried out in air in the temperature range between 700 to 1000°C for a cumulative time period of 100 hrs and for 40 no. of cycles with each cycle of 1 h duration (heating for a period of 45 mins followed by holding in room temperature for 15 mins.). Followed by oxidation, the oxide scales were further characterized by X-Ray Diffraction, and Scanning Electron Microscope. The alloy showed a marked improvement in both Cyclic and Isothermal oxidation resistance between 700 and 1000°C as compared to the Ti-6Al-4V substrate and follows a parabolic law. The kinetics and mechanism of oxidation have been established.
