Presentation Title Characteristics of Dynamic Abnormal Grain Growth in Mo and Ta

Abstract Scope The BCC refractory metals Mo and Ta are susceptible to abnormal grain growth during plastic deformation at elevated temperatures. This phenomenon is termed dynamic abnormal grain growth (DAGG) and is a result of the dynamic processes associated with plastic deformation. DAGG occurs at lower temperatures and proceeds more quickly than does static abnormal grain growth. It can produce abnormal grains several centimeters in size, effectively single crystals. The influence of microstructure on DAGG will be discussed. Particular attention will be given to the orientations of abnormal grains in relation to the textures of the polycrystalline microstructures from which they evolve. Possible mechanisms by which DAGG occurs will be presented.
