||P-13: Study on Biodegradable Mg-Zn-Nd Alloy and Its Application

Zn and Nd were chosen as alloying elements to prepare Mg-Zn-Nd ternary alloys by casting and hot extrusion technology. The microstructure, mechanical properties and the biodegradability of as-casted and as-extruded Mg-Zn-Nd alloys were studied. It was found that Zn could refine the grain. The phase constitutes were affected by the different Zn and Nd contents. The magnesium alloy wires with diameter of 0.3 mm were prepared by the combination of rotary swag and drawing technologies. The strength of the wires was improved evidently due to grain boundary strengthening. The in vivo test of the Mg-Zn-Nd wire used as suture indicated that there was no inflammation response at the interface and the muscle tissue healed well. The degradable staples were also fabricated by the Mg-Zn-Nd wire, which was successfully used for the connection of the pig intestines.
