Drive-In feeding of crucibles for Casting Machine
Automated sow casters are commonly used in the casthouse. The metal transfer from the crucible to the sow moulds is made using tilting tables. The crucibles coming from the potroom are moved from their transportation racks to the tilting tables using large overhead cranes.
A new equipment was developed to eliminate the need for these overhead cranes while allowing complete automation of the casting machine. The crucibles are placed directly on the tilting tables using the potroom transport vehicles. Mass flow control of the metal during the tilting is made using load cells on the tables. Fast and accurate filling of the moulds is made using a dosing launder.
The purpose of this paper is to describe the equipment and the process parameters used to improve casthouse productivity.
