Abstract Scope The increasing interest in metastable beta Ti alloys is due to the attractive balance of properties effected through various heat-treatments. One of the most influential microstructural features is the scale of the distribution of alpha phase. Some heat-treatments cause extremely refined alpha distribution, and it is of interest to determine what feature is causing the refinement of alpha phase. The current research is focused on the determination of the factors influencing the nucleation of alpha phase, so as to permit such controlled distributions of alpha. Two new phases have been discovered, namely O’ (a soft phonon) and O’’ phase (an ordered orthorhombic phase), but neither of these have been found to influence alpha nucleation. In contrast, the omega phase has been found to work in two ways to influence nucleation, one where it acts in a direct manner, and the other an indirect way. These various influences will be discussed.
