||I-61: The Effect of Transition Metals in Devitrification of Al-TM-RE Marginal Glass Forming Alloys

The Al-rich Al-RE and Al-TM-RE (TM: transition metals; RE: rare earth elements) marginal glass-forming alloys have attracted much attention due to unique devitrification products with a very high number density of nuclei on order of 10^23 to 10^25m-3. In order to observe the effects of solute substitution on devitrification mechanisms, Al-RE amorphous alloys were studied with two different solute species. In this respect, Al90Sm5Tb5 and Al90Y5Tb5 metallic glasses were produced by using Cu-block melt spinner. Devitrification behavior of these glasses were investigated with thermal characterization and in-situ x-ray diffraction (XRD). Accompanying with transmission electron microscope (TEM) and atom probe tomography (APT) results, different modes of devitrification sequences, a number of precipitates and fcc-Al nanocrystals were revealed in Al90Sm5Tb5 and Al90Y5Tb5 respectively.
