||Measurement of Thermodynamic Property of Mg in Molten Iron Using Transpiration Method

Magnesium is often used as desulfurization and deoxidation agents in steel making process because of its strong affinity for sulfur and oxygen. In addition, composition and hence, properties of inclusions can be controlled by adding magnesium into molten steel. In order to use magnesium effectively, thermodynamic data of magnesium in molten steel are indispensable. However, the measurement of such data is very difficult due to its high chemical reactivity and high vapor pressure at steel making temperature, and reliable data for magnesium at high temperature are very scarce. In the present study, we developed a way to equilibrate molten iron in the Ar atmosphere where magnesium partial pressure is controlled by the transpiration method, and evaluated the standard Gibbs energy for the dissolution of magnesium gas into molten iron.
