The Portevin-Le Chatelier phenomenon or dynamic strain ageing, i.e. interaction between dislocations and solute atoms supersaturating a solid solution, is observed as serrations upon plastic tensile deformation of Al-Mg alloys. This research focuses on the study of the phenomenon when NbB2 nanoparticles are present in a magnesium-supersatured Al matrix. A ball-milled 90% Al–10% NbB2 nanocomposite was added in different amounts to an Al-Mg melt. This was cast into rods that were cold-rolled into 1mm diameter wires. Three sets were prepared: an as-cast group, a solution-treated set, and a solution treated plus aged group. The solution treatment consisted of annealing and ice-water quenching. Natural aging was used before the tensile tests. Preliminary results showed that the phenomenon was observable only in the specimens bearing the solution treatment and the solution and aging treatments. The nanoparticles affected the phenomenon, causing a reduction of the serrated signal amplitude without altering the frequency.
