| Abstract Scope |
The paper will present a review of the fundamentals of likely oxidation mechanism of nanocrystalline metallic materials with examples, and validation of the hypothesis that it may be much easier to develop a protective film on nanocrystalline Fe-Cr alloys. A nanocrystalline Fe-10%Cr alloy has been found to possess in excess of an order of magnitude superior oxidation resiatance than its microcrystalline counterpart of same composition. Validation of the hypothesis may have highly attractive economic/industrial implications, for example for high temperature components in solid oxide fuel cells. |
