||Phase Stability of Nano-sized Yttria Stabilized Zirconia System

Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) has a lot of applications as like as electrolytes for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and oxygen sensors. Nano-sized YSZ (n-YSZ) shows different properties since surface energy participates in the stability of different phases. Therefore, by changing the particle size, the respective Gibbs energy of each phase changes and as a result, the stability of that phase will change. An extended n-YSZ phase diagram will enhance better understanding of the properties of the material versus particle size, composition and temperature which leads to better decisions to apply the material. In this study, we will apply the CALPHAD approach to improve the thermodynamic database of bulk YSZ system and will combine it with the surface energy of nano-sized YSZ particles to calculate the total Gibbs energy of the nano sized system. We will then plot the phase stability diagram of n-YSZ system vs. particle size, temperature and composition.
