||Nanoparticle Assisted Processing for Immiscible Alloys

Immiscible materials (alloys) are not only scientifically important, but also can offer unusual properties. However, it has been a long-standing challenge to effectively control the diffusional growth and coagulations of minority droplets during processing in order to obtain well-dispersed minority phase, which is essential for the unique properties and applications. Here we utilized thermally stable nanoparticles to rapidly assemble at the interface between the major phase and minor phase to impede the diffusion growth, producing immiscible nanocomposites with homogeneously distributed minor phases during regular solidification processing. This nanoparticle assisted casting method was successfully applied to Al-Bi and Zn-Bi immiscible material system. Further strengthening effect was obtained in Al-Bi system for self-lubricating bearing application by Cu addition and grain refinement. This approach is promising for mass production of immiscible materials that can enable a wide range of applications.
