Abstract Scope We report the fabrication of composite systems with anisotropic heterogeneities designed to directionally alter fracture toughness. Brittle polymer composites are fabricated using ultraviolet stereolithography, which allows for the precise positioning of directionally textured, uniformly spaced inclusions with cross-sectional areas that are asymmetrical along the direction of crack propagation. The heterogeneities investigated, which are either voids or polymer of differing effective modulus, are arranged as parallel channels so that crack propagation can be studied in a two-dimensional stress state. The directional alignment of these heterogeneities results in fracture toughness that varies based on how their asymmetrical cross-section is oriented with respect to the direction of crack propagation. Demonstration of analogous behavior in ceramic systems is also possible through the use of gelcasting and stereolithography of preceramic photopolymers.
