We developed a new continuum based method to determine the unique reference state in which the Burgers vectors of misfit dislocations in semicoherent interfaces are defined. Following Vattré, our method requires that the sum of the coherency stresses with the far-field stresses of the misfit dislocations must vanish. However, it does not require the definition of transformation pathways between the materials at the interface. Moreover, it is applicable to all types of interfaces including interfaces with three independent sets of dislocations (the general case). We validate our method by comparing the predicted reference state structures to the disregistery analysis of atomistic simulations of interfaces with one, two, and three sets of dislocations.
