Desktop Metal is commercializing two less-well-understood metal additive manufacturing processes across a wide materials set. Both processes create powdered metal green bodies. After shaping, the bodies are then densified via bulk sintering. Thus, while the green-body shaping processes are distinct, much of the post-processing is similar between the two processes, with similar mechanical properties resulting.
This talk will cover some of the materials qualification process at Desktop Metal for both of the processes, the challenges associated with qualifying a new additive manufacturing process, and future work at Desktop Metal on materials qualification.
