At PNNL we have combined high speed imaging and digital image correlation technique to quantify room temperature deformation behavior of Aluminum alloys. Aluminum sheets were deformed at room temperature at quasi-static and high (exceeding 1000 /s using electrohydraulic forming (EHF) technique) strain-rates. This has resulted in a wealth of spatial and temporal strain data. This work will discuss the deformation behavior of aluminum sheet including strain path, strain- strain rate relationships. The ability of digital image correlation technique to accurately measure strain near the failure region and identify location of safe and unsafe strains strain vis-a-vis conventional grid technique will also be discussed with a focus on several adjustable parameters in commercially available digital image correlation software Vic 3D.
