||Rio Tinto AP44 Cell Technology Development at Alma Smelter

The AP30 platform reached an important step at Alma Smelter who is the first to operate above 400 kA. Following this success, Rio Tinto Alcan launched the AP44 technology development to offer a technology capable to operate above 440 kA, fifty percent more than the original AP30 cell. The technology is expected to deliver world class performances such as metal production of 3274 kg/day/cell and energy consumption of approximately 13.23 kWh/kg.
To cope with the challenge to design and operate a high amperage cell, advanced modeling tools and process control system have been used. The AP44 technology integrates the most recent AP Technology developments.
The industrial piloting is underway at Alma Smelter on eight dedicated cells to demonstrate the technology at both 440 kA and 400 kA to validate the transition parameters. The new AP44 technology will be available for implementation in other smelters by September 2016.
