||Twinning and Phase Transformation in Single Crystal Ti Subjected to Multiaxial Loading Situations: Comparison of Interatomic Potentials

Single crystal HCP material Ti undergoes twinning and structural phase transformations when subjected to different loading situations along different orientations. It is also known that Modified Embedded Atom method (MEAM) potentials, incorporating angular dependent electron density to model bond bending, performs better in comparison to other potentials for Ti. Out of these MEAM potentials, there are two potentials which are quite well known – 2NN-MEAM potential of Kim and spline based MEAM potential of Henning. Question can be raised as to whether both these potentials demonstrate similar qualitative behaviour when subjected to multiaxial loads. The work presents a comprehensive study of using these two potentials to highlight differences in qualitative behaviour (with regards to activation of different twin systems and their variants along with orientation relationships and associated phase transformations) when single crystal Ti is subjected to uniaxial stress and strain based compressive and tensile loading situations along different orientations.
