Abstract Scope When a powder aggregrate is sintered, it can creep under its own weight, resulting in distortion and shape loss. This problem, known commonly as slumping, is often encountered during the densification of net-shape green bodies prepared with 3D printing processes such as fused deposition modeling and binder jet 3D printing. Here we analyze the effects of the thermal cycle, particle size, and geometry on the slumping behavior of cantilevered beams and other overhanging design features. Using both experiments and theory, we demonstrate how to minimize distortion and still achieve a high relative density by tailoring the process variables to suppress creep and accelerate interparticle neck growth.
