Abstract Scope Coherent X-ray Diffractive Imaging (CXDI) is a popular technique at highly coherent, brilliant x-ray sources for characterizing the behavior and structure of materials at the nanoscale. New x-ray sources coming on line in the next few years will produce about 100 times more data than is produced currently. In the last decade or so, great strides have been achieved in the literature on sparse representations and processing of large data sets. We will explore the use of these results in CXDI, an area to which their application has thus far been limited. We will develop a class of image retrieval algorithms based on novel non-convex and nonlinear numerical optimization techniques utilizing analysis and synthesis sparse dictionary learning methods. These algorithms will also incorporate all known physical constraints on the experimental geometry and sample, yielding a unified image retrieval algorithm of great utility to the coherent imaging community.
