||Predicting the Solidification Microstructure of Pulsed-LPBF Ti-6Al-4V Alloy Using Phase-field Modelling

In recent years, the development of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing process continues its evolution at a very fast pace, and titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V is one of the highest material prospects. Many experimental studies have been produced, however the complex melting and solidification process still pose challenges for the prediction of the final microstructure. The present work aims to build a two-step model to predict the microstructure of pulse-LPBF solidification events, which include thermal modelling of a single laser pulse on a powder bed coupled with phase-field modelling of the ensuing solidification. The model leads to the determination of the size and orientation of the solidified microstructure. The presentation will focus on presenting comparative examples of the solidification of Ti-6Al-4V for various processing parameters.
