Abstract Scope The outer shell of combustion chambers for European ARIANE 5 rocket consists of pulse-plated Nickel. Due to incorporation of Hydrogen during this process in combination with localized stress peaks there is a risk of Hydrogen induced crack formation. For improvement of the process towards a reduction of the Hydrogen susceptibility of the Nickel as well as for the establishment of suitable simulation models it is mandatory to characterize the Hydrogen distribution, diffusion and its effect on the material. This knowledge is developed within the projects MultiHy, funded by the European Union and IVP, funded by European Space Agency. The determination of the hydrogen content by localized electrochemical measurement combined with Hot Gas Extraction will be described, the efficiency and representativeness of several artificial loading methods will be reviewed. Finally, the effect of Hydrogen in various concentrations on the tensile and fracture mechanical properties of Pulse Plating Nickel will be shown.
