Abstract Scope |
The desirable properties of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steels in extreme high temperature and radiation environments have motivated research on alternatives. The most common approaches involve mechanical alloying (MA) followed by solid state processing, but these have largely fallen out of favor due to the high cost that is related to problems with complex and unreliable processing. Additive manufacturing (AM) has emerged as a promising route for the fabrication of ODS steels. The ability to produce large-scale complex shapes coupled with promising early results has generated significant interest. In this presentation, we will first provide a comprehensive review of the current state of AM of ODS steels. Next, we will focus on our own recent work under the ARPA-E GAMOW program in developing the in-situ reaction synthesis of ODS steels during laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) as a method to bypass the need for MA processing of powders. |
