||Analysis of Mo Effect on the Kinetics of Ferrite and Bainitic Ferrite Formation

Mo affects the kinetics of both the austenite-ferrite and austenite-bainitic ferrite transformation in a very complex way, and it can lead to the well-known transformation stasis phenomenon and a bay in the TTT diagram. In this study, the kinetics of isothermal formation of ferrite and bainitic ferrite in a series of Fe-C-Mo and Fe-C-Mn-Mo-Si alloys have been investigated using dilatometry and metallography, and it was found that the addition of Mo could significantly decelerate the overall formation kinetics of both ferrite and bainitic ferrite. A so called Gibbs Energy Balance (GEB) model, in which the dissipation of Gibbs energy due to diffusion inside the interface is assumed to be equal to the available chemical driving force, to predict the effect of Mo on transformation kinetics. The mechanism of transformation stasis and bay phenomenon was also discussed in detail.
